Peter Mc Grath has agreed to be part of the process of auditing the incoming  donations and expenditure to Joe Daly's

Project Info,
Some members of the newly arrived Ukrainian community have been placed in a number of Hotels in the Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown (DLR) area.

I am on a voluntary group, in the Leopardstown area, that has linked in with the Ukrainian community. We assist them in acquiring: PPS numbers, Welfare assistance, food, clothing, schools and connecting them with DLR agencies.  In this work we have established a need for adult bikes and bikes for teenagers - hence the Bike Project.
Many thanks,
Leonard

A little over a month ago the Orwell community Bikes for Ukrainian Refugees project was launched.

Since then over 50 bikes have been donated. As I collect them, Joe Day Cycles are working their way through their free servicing of the bikes to match the incoming requests.

Keep offering the bikes.
And please keep the donations coming in – these pay for parts, locks and helmets

Some pictures of donated bikes and smiling new owners.

To date, 71 bikes have been donated – and the workflow continues – collecting – servicing and delivering to Ukrainian refugees mainly in the 2 southside hotels.

We are still accepting donations of funds and bikes. Cheers

We have also delivered to Donabate a mum and son and the chair of our local voluntary group delivered a bike to an older gentleman in Gorey. This is a message we got from his wife.

"Hello, Caitriona! This is just to say you "thank you" once more. Nick seemed to come alive now that he started riding a bike. He has changed a lot for the better, he is no longer as sad as before. Many thanks to you and your husband and your beautiful sons for this miracle that you have done.

Ukrainian BIke Project Update - to date 81 bikes have been donated - many thanks.

Above is Ivana, in the middle, he was so happy to receive a bike, almost as happy, see the picture above, as when he just bought his white car.

The next picture shows him looking for his car which is under rubble after his house was bombed.

And here he is with his family hiding in the basement during the bombing.  His family spent 2 months in this basement, where he also got married.

He now lives in Dublin, living in student accommodation, with his wife with their daughter, also happy to get a bike.

Update on the Bikes for Ukrainian Refugees Project

123 bikes have been donated, since May, by Orwell members and friends to the project.
was away for a few weeks; however, Joe Daly's staff linked in with 2 club members, i.e., John Collins and Barry Denton, and Brendan a volunteer on the bike committee to keep the project rolling.

Here are a few happy pictures of some of the latest bike recipients.  If you saw the RTE Primetime last night  - you will have seen a few mentions of donated bikes they are ours.

Following on from the good news of the Orwell Randonee committee 500 Euro donation, we also want to thank Cathal O Carroll a recent Orwell Pathways graduate for offering his services to the Ukrainian bike project.

Cathal is the owner/operator of The Spokesman a Mobile Bicycle Repair business.

Like Joe Daly's - Cathal is offering his services free of charge and parts at cost price.

Here is a picture of Cathal yesterday doing his thing for the project.

A link to his website follows and you can contact Cathal at 086-8545654

To date, 134 bikes have been donated, from the Orwell Community, to the Ukrainian Bike Project.

Peter and I would like to say a BIG THANKS to the team in Joe Daly's who encouraged us from the very beginning and now with John Collins, Barry Denton, and our new service agent - The Spokesman on board. we are making one last call out for bikes.

We know that Orwell members have been very generous and your sheds are empty. However, there may be other bikes out there for example. John Collins sent out a request on his Residence Association what’s App Group and he collect 19 bikes.

Maybe you could do the same!!
We will officially be closing the project at the end of Sept.

If you have a bike to donate contact Leonard  at

Hi
A few weeks ago, a group of Ukrainian refugees, living in the Leopardstown area, arranged a party one evening to say thanks for all the bikes, helmets and locks supplied to them by the Orwell Wheelers Ukrainian Bike Project. On that evening the group handed over many gifts including a signed Ukrainian flag and a traditional Ukrainian shirt. I understand Vyshyvanka is the casual name for this embroidered shirt in Ukrainian.

The appeal, back in April, to the Orwell community delivered a great response with funds and over 230 bikes offered. As well as the bikes and funds delivered, there were many individual Orwell Club members directly involved in the project.

Joe Daly Cycles provided free service and parts at cost  price. Thanks go out to Louise, Fionn and Dave.·

Peter Mc Grath provided an auditing overview.
·
Cathal O’Carroll RIP, club member and founder of The Spokesman, provided free service and parts at costs price,

Dave Tansy also provided the same free service at our store room in Sandyford.·

John Collins, Barry Denton, club members, also provided collection and delivery of bikes.

The Leopardstown Ukrainian Support (LUS) volunteer team also provided communications, a premises, and funds to assist with the bike project. And the chairman of that committee, a good friend and neighbor of mine, Liam O’Sullivan presented a framed memento. i.e., a signed Ukrainian flag and a traditional Ukrainian shirt and a photo from the evening, to some of those involved at Joe Daly’s this morning

.This memento, on display, in Joe Daly’s shop, represents a Big Thanks to all involved in the Orwell bikes for Ukrainian project. In the photos

Brendan Carty (LUS), Leonard Kaye, Louise Keane, Liam O’Sullivan. Dave McLaughlin, Dave Tansey, and Barry Denton.

The photo from the Thank You evening is framed in memento.

Literally, back on the road again with phase 2 of the bike project for Ukrainian refugees. Here are our first customers of 2023, Sophia ( Karla, Southside Partnership) and Sophia's mum Helena.

Last year Orwell Wheeler members contributed 4,565 euros towards the Bikes for Ukrainian Refugees fund.  In addition, thanks to the bikes you donated, we were able to supply 190 serviced bikes to Ukrainian refugees plus helmets and locks, with the assistance of our main Bike service agent Joe Daly Cycles.

Ukrainian refugees continue to arrive in Ireland and we are again getting requests for bikes.  We are now getting financial support from both The Irish Red Cross and The Southside partnership of DLR.

So, while we are good for funds we are now looking for bikes that are in reasonably good order.

We are hoping to get bikes from several sources including Orwell Wheelers members.

In advance many thanks
Leonard
On behalf of the Leopardstown Ukrainian Support Team
