A crash fest of stage 2 is over and happily all 3 Scott Orwell Racers are home safe and sound!

The first serious crash happened with about 70km to go when a touch of wheels brought down about 20 riders - including Irish Champion Alice Sharpe.

With 62km to go another touch of wheels brought down about 15-20 riders and reduced the peleton to about 40 riders.

Yvonne reports that there was another crash with about 200m to go but thankfully she was able to negotiate a route around it!

In the overall results Josie Knight took a second stage win and is leading overall.

Stage 4:
A 6.5km individual time trial stage on a hilly road beginning in the pretty location of Tullaroan and ascending to the scenic location at a wind farm above the village.

Stage 5:
On Saturday evening the riders converge on the world famous Kilkenny Castle for a one-hour, high-octane criterium circuit race on a 2.1km lap that proved to be a real hit with the riders and the large and appreciative crowd lining the circuit in the last three editions. It will be the fastest bunch stage of the week and is sure to provide spectacular racing action for the spectators in Kilkenny city centre. It’s a race that will be targeted by the sprinters and will likely play an important part in the destination of the Points Classification at the end of the week.

Some blistering times set at the TT stage of Ras na mBan this morning! Lara Gillespie finished 10th, Yvonne Doran 56th and Arron Fox 73rd. Now time for our racers to rest up before the Crit Stage tonight.

If you can head down to Kilkenny and give the girls a cheer - the stage starts at 6.30 and features fast and action packed laps of Kilkenny city centre.

Stage 5 was fast!
Stage 5 was exciting!
Lara finished 3rd!

A great night of racing in Kilkenny, a dry calm evening and loads of Scott Orwell in town to cheer on the racers! Spotted working on the event were Gen Sheridan, Orla Hendron, Lucy Soden, Stephen O'Shea, Barry Redmond and Declan Quigley. Spotted down supporting were Darragh, Cora, Aisling, Una, Justin, Caoimhe, Rachel, Paul and the Reilly clann. I'm sure there were plenty more we missed.

In the racing it was fast and furious from the start and the peleton split many times before groups finally formed. Lara looked comfy in the lead group always within the top 10 on each lap.

Yvonne was in a small second group which was eventually caught by group 3 and raced competitively until they were pulled with one lap to go.

Arron's group were pulled with about 2 laps to go but they still gave it everything

On the final time through the tight corner at the bottom of the Parade an elite group of 37 turned and sprinted for the line. Lara just missed out on 2nd when she was pipped by Elynor Backstedt.

Stage 5 Results:
1. Amalie Lutro, Team Region Sør
2. Elynor Backstedt, Storey Racing @ST
3. Lara Gillespie, National Team Ireland @ST

2. Josie Knight, National Team GB @0.06
3. Anna Shackley, National Team GB @0.16

Stage 6:
The race concludes on Sunday September 10th with a tough 88km on rolling roads beginning and ending in Kilkenny at the end of five tough days of racing. The big challenge on the final day will come when the riders leave the beautiful village of Inistíoge to take on Woodstock Hill, where the final battle for general classification honours will be joined.

The riders will then race back to Kilkenny to the finish line down John Street and Rose Inn Street before swinging left for the short drag to the final finish line in front of Kilkenny Castle.

This is no Tour de France processional stage!

The race departs Kilkenny at approx 11.30am and should be on the Woodstock climb at approximately 12:30 depending on the pace.

Kilkenny – Kells – Dunamaggin – Knocktopher – Thomastown – Inistioge – Woodstock – Thomastown – Gowran – Paulstown – Kilkenny

Sunday the 8th Sept: Stage 6 - the final one!

A beautiful blue sky, very little wind and a testing route including the nasty climb at Wookstock - what more could you ask for to finish up another classic edition of Ras na mBan.

Spirits were high outside the Springhill Court Hotel this morning as riders warmed up and supporters gathered for the last time this year. The Reilly clan arrived down and seats were secured in cavalcade cars for Aine & Katie - who knows in a couple of years they will probably be racing this themselves!

Most of the supporters watched the riders leave Kilkenny and then headed directly to Woodstock to get prime cheering spots. A good and enthusiastic crowd had gathered by the time the riders arrived. Cow bells, cheers and clapping greeted them as the gradient bit and I'm fairly sure I saw a smile of thanks on Arrons face!

The race was on back to Kilkenny then for the riders and supporters alike. The pace was hot as Team GB tried to stretch the peleton out and gain back the 6 seconds Josie Knight had lost to Claire Steels but the main bunch regrouped and it was a bunch sprint up the Grand Parade to the finish line outside Kilkenny Castle. There were huge cheers when we saw Lara in the top group - she battled it out all the way to the line and came away with 4th place! Another fantastic result after 3rd in the Crit stage last night.

Yvonne Doran, who has had an outstanding race finished with the lead group - her motivation, she confessed, was the memory of all the local training rides when she had ridden the main road into Kilkenny solo into headwinds in the last year - she was determined not to ride in alone this time.

Arron Fox is racing at this level for the first time having only recently moved over from Triathlon. Riding in groups this big and among International riders is a whole new world but one she has taken too very well! Chapeau Arron - a great week!

Congratulations to our Women of Ras na mBan 2019, we are all exceptionally proud of you. Also, huge thanks to everyone involved in running this event. It is all done on a voluntary basis - we really appreciate everything you do for women's racing in Ireland.

Thanks to Stephen O'Shea for passing on this lovely message from Ras na mBan to share with our members. The photo below by Lorraine O'Sullivan is of some of the Scott Orwell Wheelers who were either helping or racing last week - missing from the photo are Declan Quigley and Lara Gillespie.

Hi Stephen

On behalf of everyone at Rás na mBan, I'd love for you to pass on our thanks to all at Scott Orwell Wheelers for the huge contribution the club made to the success of the 2019 Rás na mBan.

Without the help of the many Scott Orwell club members who make up a significant proportion of the race crew, the race would not be anywhere near the well-oiled machine it (hopefully) is.

In addition we are hugely grateful for the use of the Scott Orwell vehicles, van and car. The van was an essential part of the race fleet, allowing us to transport riders and equipment we would otherwise have struggled to accommodate. The use of your team car was vital to securing the participation of the Slovak National Team, an important addition to the race and also an addition to the race from which we hope to able to grow the international aspect of the race in future.

And not forgetting the Scott Orwell riders, without whom no edition of Rás na mBan would be complete. Lara's podium on Saturday night was certainly one of the highlights of the race for fans of Irish women's racing.

Thanks a million to you all.

All the best,

Ronan

Ronan Fox,
Deputy Race Director,
Rás na mBan.
