If you want to try the first online club race on RGT on Thursday evening but setting up yet another online system seems a bit complicated, here are very simple steps to get you there.

First a few notes:

  • RGT is free at present. No subscription fee.
  • RGT requires power measurement, which can be in your trainer or a power meter on your bike. RGT won't work with just a speed sensor like Zwift does.
  • RGT requires that you use 2 apps at the same time - one on your computer (the screen app) and one on your phone (the mobile app).
Now the steps to get everything set up:

  1. Download and install the RGT screen app on your computer. See www.rgtcycling.com/get-started/
  2. Install the RGT mobile app on your phone from your app store.
  3. Start the mobile app on your phone, and tap on "Join us" to create an account.
  4. On your computer, start the RGT screen app. It will display a 4 digit code.
  5. On your phone, in the mobile RGT app, tap on the little screen icon in the top left corner. Enter the 4 digit code to connect the 2 apps to each other.
Now you're ready to go. To try it out make sure both apps are running and paired as above, then do the following on the RGT mobile app on your phone:

  1. Tap on "Explore", and then "RGT Real Roads".
  2. Swipe the route photographs left and right to choose a route.
  3. Tap on the start button at the bottom.
  4. Tap on the Power, Cadence and Heart icons near the top to pair with your sensors.
  5. Start pedaling.
Finally, to register for the club race do this on your phone:

  1. Make sure you're logged in to the RGT mobile app.
  2. In your browser click on the race registration link that Dave provided in his post. If you get a red error page, click on the alternative link on the page. This will bring you into the RGT mobile app race page.
  3. Click on the "Register" button.

Now just show up in plenty of time to warm up before the race.

Thank you very much Barry. Would you mind setting up the Discord channel for this please?

Discord is the system used to allow everyone to talk to each other. It's free, works well, and adds hugely to online group rides. We've been using it for the Zwift group rides. All you need to do is install the software, create an account, and talk.

The same Discord channel that we used for Zwift can be used. It's always on and available. The instructions for joining it are exactly as we've been using for the Zwift rides, repeated below.

If you've already joined the Orwell Discord channel then all you have to do is log in to Discord again before the race.

If you haven't yet joined the Orwell Discord channel, then install the Discord app on your computer or phone, create an account for yourself, and then click on this link:

Part of the message is hidden for the guests. Please log in or register to see it.

If there's a choice, select "open with Discord". If required, select "Join".
You are now in the Orwell Wheelers talk group, on the text-only channel.

To get to the voice channel, click on the menu icon (3-lines) if necessary, then under "Voice channels" click on "Group ride banter". If requested, grant Discord the permissions it needs to use your microphone and speakers.

Reconnect to the Discord channel before the race starts by logging back in to Discord and selecting "Group ride banter" as above. There's no need to keep the Discord app displayed, it will work perfectly well in the background or with the screen off.

Earphones or earbuds + microphone are strongly recommended.

Yes, it’s open to all ages. It’s all one race thrown in together for tonight anyway, but if there’s enough interest in it after this one we’ll look at doing handicapping or separate races.

The “Join event” button goes live 30 minutes before the start for everyone who has registered for the race. Once you press that you’re the in the start pen, where you can carry on warming up (stationary), but can’t get out and check out the course, so don’t join until you’re ready to sit on the start line.
