Attached is a

Draft Roster of Leaders/Dispatchers for Winters Spins 2019/2020

Posting it here temporarily. We would like to get to a solution that we can edit to keep current (without having multiple versions circulating)

Many thanks to those who have volunteered as leaders. This enables us to provide 2 white and 2 yellow leaders per Sunday. We would expect that others may step up on the day if numbers require more groups.

Hi guys,

I am wondering if you could change me from Sunday the 17th of November to another Sunday? Forgot I have committed to minding my sisters kids on the 17th.

Many thanks,

Generic request to avoid the N11, I think this is the 3rd time I've flagged this.

I know I'm always told to signal this privately, but I want the following comments to be public:

Avoiding the N11, on a route that uses the N11, requires major surgery to the route, it cannot adequately be performed by some leaders on the morning of the spin.
I think that all club members should speak up, well in advance, if they see a dodgy road or junction.

There is no need for "N11 Debate #3" on this thread, as it's just for posting routes.

Hi all
Just a super polite reminder to all club members that you cannot jump into groups in stepaside / kilternan / up the road!

We are strictly limited to 12 riders per group for everyone’s safety and enjoyment.

Come to the official start and be a club member who respects the rules!

Down with that sort of stuff!!

Reminders to all going out on the winter summer spins.
Last year the club decided that for the safety of all riders that we would limit the size of all the groups to 12 people.

This will be 10 riders and 2 leaders.

With this in mind we would ask that if you wish to take part in any of the spins that you make your way to the relevant starting point and not join on where suits yourself.

Route Planning

Here is some background on how I plan the routes.

For each route I try to have a goal. Todays goal was to pick up some tough climbs (Bohilla lane and a couple of the hills behind NMK).

Over the next few weeks the Sunday spins alternate: Hilly, Flat, Hilly Flat.

I have tried to incorporate feedback from the Summer spins provided via the route feedback mail address
Part of the message is hidden for the guests. Please log in or register to see it.
.

This mechanism allows Orwell members to give route feedback without kicking off biblical debates on the forum. For the Summer Spins 50% of the feedback said the routes were too short and 50% of the feedback said the routes were too long. (Understandable given the broad scope of our club). Based on this I have planned routes that are 70-80km long - and have offered shortening options in the route description. (80km at a white 22kph pace and 30min coffee stop gets people home about 1.30pm).

Im a firm believer in the premise that Orwell Leisure Riders should be confident and skilled to ride on any stretch of road were cycling is permitted ie National Primary N1-50, National Secondary N51-99, Regional R and Local L. Accidents dont happen - they are caused. Training and practice are two ways to reduce the causes of accidents.

Todays route avoided the early stretch of the N11 by taking Ferndale Rd & Thornhill Rd. (I have had sight of some of the accident reports on Thornhill Rd. They dont make easy reading. Ironically the N11 would have involved an order of magnitude less risk. That is a statistical fact. (Fortunately Kellyanne Conway doesnt cycle with Orwell so I dont have to deal with alternative facts).
The route then picked up 3.3km on the N11 southbound from Fassaroe to Kilmacanoge. The N11 southbound at 10am on a Sunday morning may not be pleasant - but it is relatively benign. (compared with say the N11 northbound when returning from a spin).
I looked at alternatives - but was concerned that one of our riders might die of boredom.

We are a large club. Some people like hills, some people like flats.
Some people hate the N11, most people accept it as a necessary evil, and there are some people who actually like it (yep - I think thats weird- but who am I to judge).

I will make the following commitments
  1. I will continue to avoid the N11 where pragmatic
  2. I will not remove the N11 completely from all routes

The N11 makes a short 1.4km cameo appearance in the route on the 8th Dec.
There is also a 1.5km stretch on 15th Dec.
In both of these cases its a matter of - on at one junction off at next.
Thats approximately 4 minutes.

Im not going force everyone to take a 20minute detour to avoid this.

Remember - the most dangerous section of your Sunday spin is likely to be the last 5km to your house at the end.

Please direct any further route comments to the mail address above

We have had a few enquiries about the winter spins this year.
The committee decided to opt for putting them and the relevant details on to ride with gps.
Here members will be able to pin the route so they can upload them to Garmin devices or download them to another device wahoo etc..
The app also has details as to a shortened route names of leaders and dispatchers.
You can find the routes on the Orwell wheelers group on RWGPS

Right Folks
Spins are back this weekend and because of the club weekend away there will be NO spin next weekend.
This week we will be doing a flattish spin and you will find details of a shorter alternative route if you wish to take it.
Spins as usual will be leaving from the back of the old dundrum centre.
Reds 9am
Orange 9.10am
Yellows 9.20am
Whites 9.30am
May we also remind people that there will be NO jumping on to a group after it has left the start point.
This is for the safety of all.
The last message has all the details of the spins from the 20th of this month till the end of the year.

Third Time Lucky?

Don't jump onto spins. Go to the dispatch location.

Today's 13th rider was a 30 second downhill ride from the dispatch point, I have no idea what U-Turn Manoeuvre was made on Wickham Way to join us.

As a courtesy to the other riders in the group, please don't get dropped on the flat, especially by refusing to benefit from the draft, by leaving a full bike length gap.
We had the best ever Yellow group today, perfect 2x2 form, and then it just turned into a super frustrating experience.

Also, we're all standing in the wrong carpark at the dispatch, we should be in the other carpark, over the kerb.

There is one route posted for Sunday 24th Nov.
Full details are in the event on RWGPS here .
The route file is on RWGPS here .

Its not a difficult route with 1145m climb in 78km.
There is a nice 5km stretch from Ballysmutten over Ballynultagh.
Beginner groups might want to skip this by turning right when they reach the R759 at 25.9km and go to Blessington via Manor Kilbride. This shortens the route down to 67km (with only 750m climb).

There are several coffee stop options at Blessington.

As usual, start times are;
09:00 Red
09:10 Orange
09:20 Yellow
09:30 White

As per the Spins section of the club website

The following are required to participate on club spins:
  • Must be a current club member & a member of Cycling Ireland/IVCA.
  • Hard shell helmet.
  • Road racing bike in good working order (no mountain bikes, hybrids, straight handlebars or tribars).
  • Quick release wheels, or Bolt Thru-Axles.
  • Tyres and brakes must be in good condition.
  • Pump, tyre levers and spare tubes are mandatory for road side repairs.
  • Food, water bottle, money and rain jacket.

Tara, Ian, Joe
