The route for Dec15th spin has a couple of short climbs (last chance for hills as Jan/Feb weather forces us to stay low)

Sunday forecast is cold and frosty to begin with a risk of icy patches.

Leaders should adjust route to match skill level & conditions.

Sunday 9th February

met.ie are forecasting Storm Ciara for Sunday.
This will produce very strong winds with a risk of damaging gusts.
On that basis - formal Sunday spins are cancelled.

This is a conservative approach. A yellow warning :
“does not pose a threat to the general population but has potential risk on a localised scale”.

Individuals or groups can evaluate actual conditions on Sunday and personally decide if they want to go for a spin.

For transparency here is the process we follow with regard to weather and Sunday spins

Club Winter spins will NOT take place if an ORANGE weather warning is in place

The decision to cancel club spins will be taken as follows

Mon - Fri:
The forecast will be monitored by the Spin committee

Sat 1100 UTC
If a met eireann YELLOW weather warning is forecast
Then we may
  • Cancel the spin if the situation looks like deteriorating
  • or
  • Wait for further information in the 3pm met update

Sat 1500 UTC
If a met eireann YELLOW weather warning is forecast
Then we will probably
  • Cancel the spin
  • unless
  • the situation looks like improving

Sun 0900
Leaders on the ground may decide to cancel the spin
Or in the case of potential ice (but no weather warning), the leaders may change the route

Spin cancellation will be communicated via the forum and WhatsApp

Met Eireann did not post an update at 11am today

At 3pm the latest warning was published - extending the yellow warning until 11am Sunday,

On this basis we decided that it would be unwise to go ahead with any planned club spins.

Route for Sunday 23rd February gets back into the hills - but barely strays into Co. Wicklow. Current forecast suggests little or no rain but it will be cool (4-5C) with a light breeze. Dress warm (and leaders may suggest an alternate route if a clear night results in ice).

ROUTE
Old Bawn, Bohernabreena and up Glenasmole valley
Double back to get to Piperstown, Featherbed, Viewing Point
Glencullen
Killegar, Enniskerry (both sides)
Berryfields to Fassaroe, Thornhill
Ferndale, Quarry Rd, Murphys Lane, Barnaslingan
---
COFFEE OPTIONS:
Foxes (33km) or Enniskerry (41km)
---
SHORTENING OPTIONS:
This route doesnt stray too far from Dundrum
Easy to head home at any time after Glencullen

On RWGPS as DD-063-1030-Glencullen

Usual start times:

### 09:00 Red
### 09:10 Orange
### 09:20 Yellow
### 09:30 White

We are planning a "Move-Up Sunday" for the Winter spin on 22nd March.

For this spin,
  • whites should try a 'soft' yellow group
  • yellows shoud try a 'fast' yellow group
  • strong yellows can try an 'easy' orange group

On the day,
  • A reasonably flat route will be selected (with a coffee stop that can handle numbers)
  • Yellow, Orange or Red groups would have no more than 4 move-up riders join 8 experienced riders who normally cycle at that level
  • We would like to have 2 Group Leaders for all move-up groups, including orange and red for this event
  • Sunday spins operate as normal but the dispatcher on this date ensures that step up riders are assigned to groups with agreed leaders

Over the coming weeks,
  • leaders should actively watch for and speak to individuals who they think should consider moving up a level
  • riders might identify a like minded individual and agree to "move-up" together
  • anyone planning to move up on Move-Up Sunday should notify their intended move e.g. yellow to orange, to
Part of the message is hidden for the guests. Please log in or register to see it.

(This will help us plan groups for the day)

  • additional group leaders will be required at all levels, if you can help here can you notify
Part of the message is hidden for the guests. Please log in or register to see it.

  • This Move-Up day aims to to encourage individuals to move up to groups cycling at their correct average speed.

It may introduce people to other members with similar interests/ability - facilitating self organised rides over the Summer.

It will continue the development of individuals in terms of their cycling skills

It supports our club aims of ensuring everyone enjoys their cycling experience, reaches their potential and is safe on the roads.

Going forward, we would hope to run Move-Up days several times a year.
