Use the Orwell Zwift account to organise spins

If you want to organise a Zwift 'meetup' for yourself and clubmates, you can make use of the Orwell Zwift account to do it. A meetup allows you to ride together in the Zwift world, and it also allows you to ride routes in any Zwift location at any time, not restricted to the Zwift locations that are open at that time.

Here's how

  1. Decide the date and time for your meetup.

  2. Decide the Zwift route. One good way to do this is to look at the Route list on Zwift Insider or on their detailed table of all routes . Pick any location except Bologna and Crit City. Pick any route except those that are marked "Event only".

  3. Decide who to invite and make a list of their Zwift names. You can do this any way that you wish, but they must be members of Orwell Wheelers. One way is to look at the list of followers of Orwell Wheelers on Zwift. On the Zwift Companion app on your phone tap on the menu icon in the top left, tap on your own name at the top, tap on "following", tap on Orwell Wheelers in the list, tap on "followers". Take a note of the Zwift names you want invited (don't forget to include yourself).

  4. Decide whether you want the meetup to be 'no drop' or not. Use this if the group will have a mix of abilities and you want to make sure that the group does not become spread out.

  5. Send all the information by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Some limitations

Give as much notice of your meetup as you can. Any Zwift account can only create a maximum of 3 meetups in any 24 hour period, so if you leave the arrangements too late it might not be possible for the Orwell account to create yours. That's create 3 in 24 hours, not run them. There is no limit on the number of meetups organised by one account that can run in 24 hours, or even at the same time.

It's not possible to invite all Orwell Zwifters to a meetup because there's a limit of 100 invitations issued per meetup. That's invitations issued, not invitations accepted.

Why?

Using the Orwell Zwift account is an alternative to using your own Zwift account to arrange the meetup. There are a couple of benefits to doing it via the Orwell Zwift account:

  • Almost all Orwell Zwift users are already following the Orwell account, so anyone can be invited. You don't have to get everyone to follow you so that you can invite them.
  • The Orwell account is Zwift level 6, so it can organise meetups on routes that are not accessible to lower level Zwift users. Only the meetup organiser needs to be L6+ to access those routes for all riders in the meetup.

Talk

Don't forget you can use Discord to talk together during your meetup. Just tell everyone to log in to it. If the existing Orwell "Group ride banter" channel on Discord becomes congested we can easily create extra channels to keep conversations separate. Just let us know.

This process is a bit of an experiment, so please suggest any changes you think might make things easier or better.
