Our Sunday spin on Zwift this week will be on Watopia's "Out and back again" route. Pace will be a little more relaxed than usual as we will be accompanying Stephen McNally on part of his 12 hour ride (see below).

I estimate our ride will take us about 90 minutes. You can drop out during the ride if you're short of time but you can't join the ride after it has started. Please allow plenty of time to get set up and do a bit of warmup - don't get left behind!

All welcome, no matter what level of rider, and from Zwift first timers to hardened old hands. Zwift's "no-drop" function means the group will stay together no matter how hard you ride on the front or how easy you take it on the back. If you need help getting set up for Zwift look at recent posts here in the forum, or just post a question below. We're here to help.

Registration

Please fill in this form to join the meetup:

Registration will close 30 minutes before the scheduled start, or when 100 riders have registered.

Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association

Our ride is arranged to join Stephen McNally who will ride this route for 12 hours continuously on Sunday to raise funds for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association . By the time we start Stephen will already have done 4 hours, and when we finish he will still have 6 and a half to go. Please consider supporting Stephen's fund raising at:
www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/11384993_12-ho...cling-for-imnda.html

It will also be possible for you to ride with Stephen for any portion of the day between 7am and 7pm, and it will be possible for you to watch or talk at any time. Information on how to do these will be posted on the forum. Read this post .

Ride banter

We'll be using Discord to provide voice chat during the ride. On recent spins almost all the riders were using it, so if you haven't tried it yet give it a go this time. It adds hugely to your ride experience, and it's really easy - just install the software, create an account, and click on the link below.

If you've already joined the Orwell Discord channel then all you have to do is log in to Discord again before the ride. This is the same Discord channel that is used for the club races, so if you joined the voice channel for that then you only have to log in again..

If you haven't yet joined the Orwell Discord channel, then install the Discord app on your computer or phone, create an account for yourself, and then click on this link:

Part of the message is hidden for the guests. Please log in or register to see it.

If there's a choice, select "open with Discord". If required, select "Join". Click on the Orwell yellow O icon. You are now in the Orwell Wheelers talk group, on the text-only channel.

To get to the voice channel, click on the menu icon (3-lines) if necessary, then under "Voice channels" click on "Group ride banter". If requested, grant Discord the permissions it needs to use your microphone and speakers.

Reconnect to the Discord channel before our ride starts by logging back in to Discord and selecting "Group ride banter" as above. There's no need to keep the Discord app displayed, it will work perfectly well in the background or with the screen off.

Headphones or earbuds + microphone are strongly recommended. You'll hear better, and others will hear you better.

Many of us are following structured training plans and may be torn between a free ride (Zwift Meetup) and a workout. Here is a link to how you can do both:

I have not tried this yet but will try it tomorrow. If anyone has done this already, how did it "work out" (couldn't help myself).

Normally, doing a workout during our club meetups is ok. A number of people have done it. When they do an interval effort and up the pace the rest of the group get magically whooshed along by the 'no drop' feature. Usually that's very welcome.

However, tomorrow is different because we'll be accompanying Stephen McNally. He won't be part of the no drop function, so we will keep our pace down to match his. Anyone on a workout in the meetup would disrupt that, so just for tomorrow we're asking people not to do a workout as part of the meetup.

Hi John,
I (and usually a few others) do workouts on meetups most of the time and they work out fine. Small gaps may open from time to time when doing the type of intensity that can be sustained for a minute but usually comes back together no problem. Only thing is that if you're doing short sharp sprints you will gain a few seconds on the group.

Zwift issued a software update a couple of days ago, so if you haven't logged in for a few days remember it will take a few minutes for that to be automatically applied when you next log in.
