At every single age level, the kids are knocking lumps off their TT times, building their skill at managing the final corner on the elimination race and riding well as groups in the handicap races., and the cheering from the parents as every racer crosses the line is very welcome!

Toby Watson was a very welcome visitor again on Monday and took some fantastic photos, which can be seen here:

Because of Covid regulations we have not been permitted to present prize money on each evening, which is a terrible shame -- the kids get REALLY excited about that bit! 44 kids have prizemoney on the way, and I have a chart which will be at the racing next week for those who are interested. Currently leading the cash stakes are James Cunningham (€27), Ben Cunningham (€25) and Jake Govan (€24).

There WILL be Monday Night Racing next week, on Monday 2 August. Sure the Bank Holiday is over by then, right!?

Week 7 results: 2 August

Another great evening's racing in Corkagh Park, with lots of fantastic cheering and encouragement for our kids. Huge compliments to the kids themselves, particularly those who waited in the elimination race for people who mistakenly thought they were out to catch back on and compete on the next lap: you're brilliant!
We had a bit of gear failure too, with a chain drop for Aidan and a broken chain for Ben (you don't know your own strength!), but everyone carried on and kept smiling
Now, to the results: in all cases these are a combination of placings in the time trial, elimination and handicap races, with ties broken by position in the handicap race. There were LOTS of ties to be broken this week, with tight racing in all categories. Orwell Wheelers unless otherwise noted.

Week 8 Results: 9 August

Another fantastic turnout on yet another lovely evening for racing: we have been blessed this year. The only negative was an unfortunate crash that Martin Peters had in the handicap race. He got some bumps and bruises, but was there to support Darragh for the rest of the evening: get well soon!
So much of the racing was really tight: eight under 12s were within 6 seconds of each other in the TT, and the Rian's elimination in the U14/U16 race was by a hair! It was great to see the U12 riders working together so well in their handicap against the older riders, work which saw them home comfortably before most of the older riders. We all love to see the kids growing, developing and learning over the course of the summer.
Here are the results: as always, a combination of placings in time trial, elimination and handicap races. Orwell Wheelers unless noted otherwise.

Two more race nights left
There are two more nights racing remaining: so there's still time to get to the top of the rankings for quite a few riders! We will be back in Corkagh Park on Monday 16 August and again on Monday 23 August, when prizes (both cash and trophies) will be awarded.

Week 9 Results: 16 August

We had another fantastic night of youth racing yesterday: 50 kids across all age levels, with some moments that really stuck out. Eleanor coaching her twin brother around, the parents giving great encouragement to all the kids who got eliminated in the elimination races, the new kids getting welcomed straight into the fold -- and the sheer determination on Molly's face as she powered up the hill on yet another lap of the race! Great to see Jack honouring his National Champs jersey in the final week before this year's event with gut-busting efforts in each race, the skill and effort of Aine, Katie and Fionn C in tagging onto "faster" groups in the handicap and a great rematch of last weekend's Leinster U12 battle between Rian Mc, James, Fionn C and Tadhg.

Thanks to the kids who helped marshall the younger elimination races, to the kids for racing safely, and the team of helpers who did the maths for the handicap races -- and helped to identify all the finishers!

The results, as always, are a combination of placings in the time trial, elimination race and handicap race, with ties decided by placing in the handicap race. There's one more evening in the series, next monday 23 August, and there is still plenty of room for changing positions in the overall! Orwell Wheelers unless noted.

Under 8
First: Ben Cunningham (again ... no matter how difficult we make the handicap for him!)
Second: Jonas Sage (U/A Leinster)
Third: James Hunt
Fourth: Daniel O'Sullivan
Overall series: Ben Cunningham (85 points), Eddie Hodge (50), Molly Turner (39). Advik, Daire, Chloe and Josh still in the running for third!

Under 10
First: Jake Govan
Second: Fionn Hayes
Third: Daria Murphy
Fourth: Eire McCrystal (Bellurgan)
Overall series: Jake Govan (81 points), Connor Synnott (U/A Leinster. 46 points), Remy Fragniere (43 points). Daria and Aidan still in the running for third ...

Under 12
First: James Cunningham
Second: Rian McCrystal (Bellurgan)
Third: Katie Turner
Fourth: Fionn Crinion
Overall series: James Cunningham (88 points), Tadhg Roberts (52 points), Katie Turner (47 points). Daithi still an outside shot at a podium.

Under 14
First: Jack Dempsey (Gorey)
Second: Darragh Byrne (Gorey)
Third: Aine Reilly
Fourth: George Sevastopulo (Sundrive)
Overall series: Aine Reilly (42 points), Fionn Killeen (41 points), Jack Dempsey (40 points). Darragh Byrne still in touch.

Under 16
First: Patrick O'Sullivan
Second: Adam Foley (Inspiration Navan)
Third: David Harrington
Fourth: Conor Prendergast (Galway Bay)
Overall series: Adam Foley (59 points), Patrick O'Sullivan (57 points), David Harrington (49 points)

Some great photos of the elimination races (www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=49136708253...pcb.4913719891989594) and time trials (www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=49132546420...pcb.4913278302033753) by John Hammer.

So the Monday Night Youth Racing series is all coming to the boil nicely ... We will make a few changes to the regular schedule next week to allow time for presentations.

Hope to see you all then!

Special trophies:
Racecraft: Aine Reilly, for always being in the right place at the right time, timing her sprints in the elimination races to perfection and clinging on like a limpet to any group who thought they could pass her out!

Combativity: for always having their game faces on and focussing completely on the racing at all times, and their never-say-die attitude: Molly Turner and Daria Murphy.

Noel O'Neill Perpetual Trophy: for embodying the spirit of Monday Night Youth Racing -- fast and hard racing, friendship, leadership: and fun! Ben Cunningham is our winner

That's it for another year: over 80 kids from 17 clubs took part, from Waterford to Galway, Louth to Wicklow, and it was great to have Noel there for the final night to present the trophies. Thanks for coming along and making it such a festival of youth bike racing.
