As always this time of year the cycling calendar is busy! There is a lot going on within the club and further afield.  As the National Road Championships are on this weekend lets start with Racing.

Road Racing:

First up this week is the National Time Trial Championships on Thursday the 28th of June. Competing for Scott Orwell Wheelers in Sligo will be Ronan Grimes, Lara Gillespie and Orla Hendron.  By the time you read this racing may well be over so keep an eye on the forum for results.

The weekend sees the National Road Race Championships take place in Sligo. The timetable is:

Saturday 30th June
10.00: Junior Men’s Road Race – 122.5km
13.00: Elite Women’s Road Race – 105km

Sunday 25th March
09.00: Junior Women’s Road Race – 70km
13.00: Senior Road Race incorporating the U23 Championships – 175km

Unfortunately we don’t have any Junior men racing on Saturday but the women's race includes Breda Horan, Orla Hendron and one of the hot pre-race favourites Áine Donegan.

On Sunday Lara Gillespie lines out for the Junior women's race as one of the favourites and then in the afternoon Eoin Ahern, Ronan Grimes and Ronan O’Flynn take to the roads along side Nico Roche, Ryan Mullen and Sam Bennett to fight it out in the Senior men’s race!

IVCA LEAGUE

After a break last weekend for the IVCA Time Trial Championships the league returns this Sunday with Round 15, The Memorial Cups, taking place in Monesterevin. Sign on from 8am to 8.45am and racing starts at 9am.

On Tuesday the 3rd of July Round 16 takes place back on the Green Sheds circuit at 7.15pm.

Currently Romano Morelli is sitting best of the Scott Orwell riders, he is in 2nd place overall in Group 3.

CLUB LEAGUE:

This Thursday, the 28th of June, we head back to Dorey’s Forge for round 13 of the league. Sign on closes at 7.15pm.

Next Thursday, the 5th of July, will see the club Road Race Championships. The venue is still to be decided so keep an eye on the forum during the week for full details.

LEISURE:

Saturday 30th June:

Saturday’s (30th June) spins depart opposite Joe Dalys at 8.30am with the suggested routes below. White & Yellow groups are led.

White route
74km 724 mts

Yellow route
81kms 835mts

Orange route
90 kms 1,384mts

Also on this weekend are several Sportives that usually attract a good Scott Orwell following:

Saturday has the Leinster Loop Family cycle, starting from the GAA club in Narraghmore, Co. Kildare.

Sunday is a BUSY day with lots of choice.  Our neighbours, Bray Wheelers, are running the Paddy Martin Randonnee. This is always a great event, well supported and loads of food all for only €15. Full details on the Bray Wheelers Website.

In Kildare the Leinster Loop starts and finishes at the GAA club in Narraghmore. This sportive takes in the counties of Kildare, Wicklow, Carlow and Kilkenny and has only a little climbing so is understandably popular!

There are 3 Ulster based Sportives this weekend – the Tour of Monaghan, the Roe Valley Ladies Sportive and the Atlantic Way Charity Sportive. Full details on the Cycling Ireland website.

In Munster the only sportive on this weekend appears to be the Sliabh Luachra CC Sportive. It’s difficult to find information on this event but I do know it starts at 9am and has route options of  55km, 75km or 105km.

SOCIAL

As part of our 70th Anniversary year, we're promoting a screening on July 4th of All for One, a documentary about the Scott-sponsored Australian Orica-GreenEdge pro cycling team.

The film follows the founding and first five years of the Orica-GreenEdge pro cycling team, featuring interviews with the riders, sports directors and other staff as they find their way in the pro cycling world. From highs like Mathew Hayman's win at Paris-Roubaix to lows like the team bus getting stuck under the finish gantry at the Tour de France in 2016

There is a small commission for the club, which we will donate to our chosen charity of Dundrum Arch Club. This is a social club for people with intellectual disabilities that is serviced fully by volunteers with all proceeds going towards benefiting the members directly.

There is no rating for this film in Ireland yet, but in other jurisdictions it's gotten a PG or 15s rating for coarse language. U15s should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The film will be shown in in Rathmines Omniplex (Swan Cinema) at 18.30 on Wednesday July 4th. Tickets cost €10.50 (+75c booking fee). It'll help get you in the mood for the 2018 Tour de France, which starts just 3 days later!

We have also been in touch with the Mitchleson Scott Professional cycling team and they have very kindly sent us a 2016 jersey signed by the Orica GreenEdge team that year. We will be giving away the jersey to one lucky attendee on the night as a thank you for supporting the event.

AUDAX Advance notice:

Technically this one will go in next weeks “The Week Ahead” but as it is 300km long I thought some advance notice would be handy!
