Kinch and Blennerhassett on target in Emyvale

Ciara Kinch produced the ride of her cycling career to date when she attacked out of the main group in the Women’s National League race on the fourth and final 18km lap of an undulating course in the Co Monaghan countryside.

As Fran Meehan (Tullamore) soloed to victory, Kinch jumped clear just before the final 1.5km climb to the finish line and at one stage looked likely to hang on for an excellent third place.

The line couldn’t come quick enough at the end of Kinch’s brave effort but she retained enough energy and determination to hang on for a fine fifth place finish in exalted company, scoring her first national league points.

Orla Tansey was active throughout and finished safely in the main bunch. Orwell’s Sandra Telford also raced well in her first appearance on the Leinster squad.

Meanwhile in the A4 race on the same card Tom Blennerhassett took his first open race placing with a powerful late charge for the line, taking a fine sixth from the 60-man group.

On a hot day for racing Blennerhassett, riding just his third open race, stayed clear of trouble and well hydrated throughout the 72km to put himself into contention approaching the line. Despite getting baulked in the final 400m he found a way clear for a late burst to the line, displaying the power that has produced promotion to the Semi Scratch in the Inter Club already this season.
