McNally's autumn gold

IVCA Track Championships, Sundrive Road, Co. Dublin, 19th-20th September

Stephen McNally and Brendan Whelan

On a day to remember at the IVCA Track Championships in Sundrive Road last Saturday Stephen McNally won two gold medals and regained his Vets 500m Time Trial record.

McNally was last to go in the 40-49 year-old age group and had just seen Brendan Whelan (Staggs Lucan CRC) set a new outright Vets record of 37.66, edging ahead of previous record holder Liam Collins (Cycling Pursuits) in the process.

Orwell's reigning Cycling Ireland National Vets track champion steeled himself for his run and stopped the clocks six hundredths of a second faster than Whelan to take the gold medal and retake the national record he had briefly held last month.

The Dunboyne based racer then focused on the 3km pursuit which was run off as a single run with fastest time to win. McNally caught his rival Ger Ivory (Bray Wheelers) at two thirds distance and went on to record a time over 15 seconds faster than his closest rival.

Eddie Lynch and Orla Tansey flew the flag for Orwell on the Sunday's second day of racing with Lynch scooping a fine silver medal in the 40-49 year old Scratch race after attacking early on with John Moran (Ravens CRC) and hanging on when caught by eventual winner Brendan Whelan.

Tansey just missed out on a medal in the 50-59 Sprint, losing out in the semi-finals to gold medallist Terry Cromer and then in the bronze medal ride off to Aidan Ryan. Orla did take a bronze medal with an impressive ride in the Scratch race behind Cromer and Terry Ferris (Murphy and Gunne).
