Telford on top in Wicklow
Wicklow League Round 6, Ashford, Co. Wicklow, 7th July 2009
Sandra Telford took her maiden road race victory in the final round of the Wicklow Women's League on Tuesday night.
The Orwell racing neophyte powered up the finishing straight to take the honours by the narrowest of margins following six hard laps of racing on the Kilpeddar circuit. Scratch failed to get on terms and the front three groups came together at the top of the drag on the last lap, making for a tactical last two kilometres.
Ailbhe Ivory (Bray Wheelers) led out from a long way but Telford timed her finishing effort to perfection to get the decision.
Rachael Kaye Mellor (Orwell) was first U14 rider home, followed by Caoimhe Ivory. This made for a tie between herself and Kayleigh Gibbons (Lucan) in the overall points, and the winner of the league was decided by countback on wins.
Kayleigh came out tops by virtue of having won the last two races she rode, while Rachael had a first and a second. Rachel's position is remarkable considering she is an U12 riding up a category in the U14's.
