And so it begins. The organisers of Rás Tailteann 2016 chose Dublin Castle as the departure point for the 8 day International road race to commemorate the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising.

In late May, an Orwell Wheelers team of Tom Blennerhassett, Neal Hudson, Brian McArdle, Dick O'Brien and guest rider Michael Butler took to the start line of the 2015 An Post Rás. Ably assisted by soigneurs Mary Brady and Aishling Brady, mechanic Fionn Sheridan and managed by DS Pat O'Brien, they began an eight day trial that would test their physical and mental limits!

Here's a little piece from the archives, Brian Ahern's Rás diary from 2004, ten years ago. An eventful race for the Orwell legend, he goes into great detail on what is an eight day sufferfest for most. It's revised and updated, as he claims he originally typed it with one finger of one hand (spoilers!).

Our league winner for 2015, Brian McArdle, collected his trophy on Saturday night after 21 weeks of trying to fend off the Murnane brothers. Earlier this year he undertook his first Rás, and we finally published his account below.

As the old expression goes “time is a great healer” and that is certainly the case when Jamie decided to ride the Rás for the second consecutive year. The pain and stress of the previous year was fading, all that remained were fond memories of a fantastic week with some great people racing around Ireland in glorious sunshine.

Neal Hudson had one of the hardest rides of the 2015 An Post Rás - an early crash on the opening stage nearly costing him his place. He then had to carry the injuries from that through the entire week, but true grit and determination saw him through. He takes us through his torment below...

Tomorrow sees the start of the An Post Rás 2013: eight days of suffering for amateur and pro riders alike, with the longest stage being 160 km, and the penultimate one winding through the Wicklow mountains. For the second year running Orwell will be entering a five-man team to compete for the county prizes, we profile them below!

The entertainment for Tuesday's Rás fundraiser has been unveiled! We've got a pair of main showpieces to give the lads not just one but two opportunities to impress you, and humiliate themselves.

The fundraiser table quiz for the Rás team will take place on Friday April 8th. There will also be a raffle on the night!

The Rás Tailteann 2018 starts this Sunday with a top class field of domestic and International cyclists. The five riders and support personnel to represent Scott Orwell at An Post Rás, Ireland’s top international stage race for men, have been announced.

So this was it. A hard year of training was complete. There had been many sacrifices along the way. I had cut back on the treats, eased off the sauce and succumbed to a diet of low intensity monster miles each weekend come rain, hail or shine. My family had suffered with me.
