Junior Road Race Championships

Orwell's Craig Arrigan narrowly missed out on the podium in yesterday's Junior RR champs held near Dundalk. In a 100km+ race that featured plenty of attacks, Arrigan went with a promising move of five in the final 20km. Unluckily he was dropped from the group, meaning he finished on his own just outside the medals in fifth position. A tremendous effort that will stand to him next season.

Black Rose GP

A strong Orwell team travelled to Galway yesterday for the Black Rose GP - the men of the Rás Daniel Whiting, Pat O'Brien and Aidan Collins. Joining them was the rapid-rising racing freshman Eric Downey. Fresh from their third place on Thursday in the inter-club league TTT, they put their well-drilled pace line into action in the closing stages of an aggressive race of 80km.

In the third of four laps, a break went which featured a lot of strong danger men -  Art MacManusa (South Dublin CC), Robyn Kelly (Waterford Racing CC), and Chris Reilly (Bohermeen CC) among others.

With no Orwell man in there, Eric was instrumental in chasing down the break, and it was caught in the closing kilometres - all bar Reilly, who had jumped away and went on to be the race's eventual winner.

In the chasing group, the Orwell line-out team was drilling things, unfortunately a little too hard, with the front of the train ending up in the rear of the first chasing group. Aidan ended in that position, about 8th over the line, taking first unplaced A2. Eric was right behind him, grabbing the second unplaced A2 prize.
